“An Irrational Fancy" exhibition with curated selections from the UNT Libraries Special Collections. Reception:
March 29, 10 a.m.–2 p.m.
"An Irrational Fancy" delves into future existences — both real and imagined. Inspired
by Edgar Allan Poe's poignant reflection, "It is by no means an irrational fancy that,
in a future existence, we shall look upon what we think our present existence, as
a dream." The exhibition invites us to envision potential and explore a world where
past, present, and future blur into imagined possibilities. With a curated selection
from the UNT Libraries' core collection and borrowing from the Special Collections,
the featured artists and artworks reflect on these questions and construct a mosaic
of futures where the human condition is reimagined worlds shaped by technological
advancements, environmental transformations, and the boundless power of imagination.
"The Word is Not Lucky" by artist Eileen Maxson, curated by Mónica Salazar, CVAD lecturer in Art History. Reception: March 29, 10
a.m.–2 p.m.
"The Word Is Not Lucky" includes works primarily from the series which processes the
flooding of her parent's home during Hurricane Harvey and her grandfather's death
two years earlier. Maxson is a visiting assistant professor of integrated media at
Oberlin College and Conservatory, Oberlin, Ohio. She is an interdisciplinary artist
working at the confluence of video, performance, installation, and photography. Through
the lens of family experience, humor, and pathos, her work confronts the American
Dream within a capitalistic society and calls out promises, shifting them into wry
reflections on the impact of media and consumer culture and their legacies.
