About

If you were a part of our community or graduated in 1998 or later, you likely know Jerry Aul, a U.S. Navy veteran, for his exceptional contributions in the Dean's Office. Jerry is renowned for his unwavering dedication and reliability in completing tasks. He has been a steadfast presence, witnessing the institution's evolution from the School of Visual Arts to the College of Visual Arts and Design in 2004. His roles have included positions in the Department of Design, Advising, and ultimately the Dean's Office. Jerry is well-known for his friendly demeanor, welcoming smile, and strong work ethic.

Throughout the years, Jerry has consistently demonstrated a commitment to mastering new technologies, adapting to changes, and assisting new employees. He has observed significant growth within the college, particularly in the number of faculty, staff, and students. One of the most notable transformations, according to Jerry, is the $70 million renovation and expansion of the Art Building, completed in 2019. His ongoing collaboration with faculty and students in higher education inspired him to resume his college education. However, his primary motivations were to achieve a long-term goal and serve as a positive role model for his granddaughters, Ava and Alexandria, who now reside with him and his wife, Tracey.

In 2002, with GI Bill benefits, Jerry started his college career at UNT — until his tuition benefits ran out in three years. He was a bachelor out of college and dropped out of this degree program.

Aul took up the challenge again to to complete his bachelor's degree and he graduated in 2023: "I wanted to show my granddaughters that taking on a difficult challenge at any age and seeing it through is worth the hard work and effort," Aul says.
