Types of Aid:  Gift Aid: Grants & Scholarships | AID YOU PAY BACK: LOANS | Employment Opportunities

Earning a college degree is one of the most important investments you will make in your life.

Knowing more about ways to pay for college is important; let us help you find a way that works best for you!

Important Tips to Help You Pay for College

1. Get help to learn how to manage your personal finances!

Balancing your checkbook or managing a tight budget may not have been covered in high school!

UNT’s award-winning Student Money Management Center is here to help you! The professional SMMC staff provide workshops and confidential counseling sessions. Contact the SMMC by email at Money.Management@unt.edu.

Note: The center also provides emergency funding to students in need through the Eagle Support Program. This is a loan-based program that addresses cost-of-attendance expenses specific to UNT. Just as you're investing in your education, we want to make sure that we’re investing in your continued success. Check out Tip #5 for info about more help through the Start Green, Stay Green program.

2. Find out if you are eligible for financial assistance!

How do you do that? Start by filling out the online Free Application for Federal Student Aid, FAFSA®! All students are strongly encouraged to complete this application — even if you are interested only in scholarships. You may be eligible for a little or a lot, but only those who apply will know!

Note: Nearly all students who complete the FAFSA receive some type of financial assistance. Financial aid awards are funded and regulated by federal and state governments, so applying for and receiving financial aid is a process. You must apply each year: a new FAFSA is available annually by Oct. 1.

BTW, You will need this: UNT's school code is 003594

3. The best time to apply for financial assistance is...

Early! What's early? Every Oct. 1 the new Free Application for Federal Student Aid, FAFSA® comes out — start then if you want aid for the next year. Through the FAFSA®, your eligibility can be determined for you to receive the maximum award possible. Did you know that there is less money to give away later in the cycle? So, apply in October!

Important: Apply every year with a new application — new year: new application — for every year that you want help for your upcoming semesters! Did we say early? The earlier you apply the better because later in the year the money often already has been given away.

4. Ask questions about paying for college!

Get to know your UNT financial aid advisors! Contact UNT Financial Aid and Scholarships, 940-565-2302, FinancialAid@unt.edu, Eagle Student Services Center, Room 228. The financial aid advisors can help you learn about grants and scholarships (money you don't pay back), or loans (money you do pay pack) to help pay for college. Be sure to read about the CVAD Resources also on this page.
